Coletiva de Imprensa no Royalty Hotel com Gabriel Medina, Kelly Slater, Adriano de Souza, Mick Fanning, Filipe Toledo, Carissa Moore e Silvana Lima é a atração da segunda-feira no Rio de Janeiro
A segunda-feira amanheceu com ondas muito pequenas na Barra da Tijuca e o início do Oi Rio Pro foi adiado para as 7h00 da terça-feira no Rio de Janeiro. A primeira chamada do dia é para as duas categorias, com a comissão técnica decidindo se a etapa brasileira do Samsung Galaxy World Surf League Championship Tour vai começar pela masculina ou pela feminina, depois de analisar as condições do mar. O prazo desta quarta parada da corrida pelo título mundial vai até o dia 22 e os melhores surfistas do mundo ganharam um dia a mais de folga para treinar nas ondas cariocas, ou para descansar da viagem para o Brasil. Com o adiamento da competição, a única atração da segunda-feira na Barra da Tijuca é a coletiva de imprensa dos destaques do circuito mundial às 17h00 no Royalty Hotel Barra, na Av. do Pepê, 690.
O campeão mundial Gabriel Medina, o líder do ranking 2015, Adriano de Souza, o vencedor da primeira etapa da temporada na Gold Coast, Filipe Toledo, o onze vezes campeão mundial Kelly Slater, o tricampeão Mick Fanning, a bicampeã mundial e líder do ranking atual, Carissa Moore, e a cearense nota 10, Silvana Lima, vão estar atendendo os jornalistas na coletiva de imprensa do Oi Rio Pro. Depois do inédito título mundial conquistado por Gabriel Medina no ano passado e do ótimo início de temporada dos brasileiros nas três etapas da Austrália, a expectativa é de praia lotada todos os dias no Postinho da Barra da Tijuca.
"Já estamos monitorando um grande swell (ondulação) a caminho, teremos que ficar atentos às condições do vento, mas as ondas devem entrar com um bom tamanho e vai ser divertido", disse o comissário da World Surf League, Kieren Perrow, responsável pelo anúncio da decisão da comissão técnica a cada dia do Oi Rio Pro. "Hoje (segunda-feira) já vimos que não haverá mudanças na condição do mar ao longo do dia, vai se manter assim com ondas pequenas, então o evento ficará "off". Vamos ficar de olho como estará amanhã (terça-feira). Se o vento não ficar muito forte e o swell subir um pouco, poderemos ter boas ondas para começar o evento".
O Oi Rio Pro vai acontecer num momento especial da história do surfe brasileiro. Em 2015, a capital carioca está completando 25 anos sediando etapas válidas pelo título mundial e a data coincide com as festividades dos 450 anos de fundação da cidade do Rio de Janeiro. E esta também será a primeira vez que Adriano de Souza vai competir com a camisa amarela de líder do ranking mundial, posição conquistada com a vitória no Drug Aware Margaret River Pro.
Antes, Mineirinho já havia perdido no desempate o título do Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach na final contra o australiano Mick Fanning e parado nas semifinais do Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, que terminou com Filipe Toledo festejando a sua primeira vitória no Samsung Galaxy World Surf League Championship Tour. Além dos sete integrantes da elite dos top-34, a "seleção brasileira" do CT competirá reforçada pelo catarinense Alejo Muniz e os paulistas Alex Ribeiro e David do Carmo.
"Estou bem tranquilo, já estou aqui no Rio há dez dias treinando para este campeonato e agora é aguardar o dia que vai começar mesmo", disse Adriano de Souza, que falou sobre defender a liderança do ranking no Brasil. Como em todos os dias, a comissão técnica do Oi Rio Pro se reúne para analisar as condições e decidir se a competição começa pela categoria masculina ou feminina, ou se será adiada novamente para aguardar por melhores ondas no Postinho ou no Meio da Barra, onde próximo ao Posto 6 está instalada a estrutura alternativa da etapa brasileira do Samsung Galaxy World Surf League Championship Tour.
Se a comissão técnica escolher iniciar o campeonato pela categoria masculina, a primeira bateria do Oi Rio Pro será entre o australiano Taj Burrow, o francês Jeremy Flores e o norte-americano Brett Simpson, com Kelly Slater já entrando no segundo confronto do dia, Gabriel Medina no quarto, Mick Fanning no quinto e no sexto Adriano de Souza estreia com a "lycra" amarela de número 1 do mundo. Alex Ribeiro conquista quarta vitória brasileira no Quiksilver Pro Saquarema
Paulista assumiu o segundo lugar no ranking do WSL Qualifying Series batendo o novo líder, Jeremy Flores, na onda que surfou no último minuto da bateria final contra o francês na Praia de Itaúna
O paulista Alex Ribeiro, 25 anos, é o novo campeão do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema, desempatando o placar contra a Austrália para 4 a 3 no número de títulos conquistados nas sete edições desta etapa na Praia de Itaúna. A vitória foi dramática, conseguida na onda que entrou no último minuto da bateria, abrindo a parede para ele acertar uma série de três manobras muito fortes e tirar nota 8,0 dos juízes para virar o placar para 14,93 a 14,17 pontos sobre o francês Jeremy Flores, 27 anos, que assumiu a ponta no ranking do WSL Qualifying Series. Com o título, Alex Ribeiro saltou da 57.a para a segunda posição com os 10.000 pontos recebidos e faturou o prêmio máximo de 40 mil dólares. Ele ainda ganhou uma vaga de convidado para participar do Oi Rio Pro, a etapa brasileira do Samsung Galaxy World Surf League Championship Tour que começa nesta segunda-feira na Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro.
"Eu já estava indo tranquilo pra bateria achando que tinha conseguido a vaga de convidado para disputar o CT no Rio de Janeiro, mas aí me falaram que eu tinha que vencer a final para isso (para superar o australiano Jack Freestone no ranking), então entrei mais concentrado ainda para buscar a vitória", disse Alex Ribeiro. "Eu tive a frieza de esperar até o fim por uma onda boa, porque eu sabia que ela ia vir. O Jeremy (Flores) tinha a maior nota da bateria, eu tinha duas medianas e eu sabia que se viesse uma onda boa eu ia conseguir a nota que precisava, então minha tática deu certo e estou muito feliz".
Ele também falou sobre a longa calmaria na Praia de Itaúna na batalha final pelo título do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema, com a onda da virada só entrando no último minuto da bateria. "Eu vi as ondas mexendo lá dentro e eu só dizendo para mim mesmo que ia vir, ia vir, mas não vinha. O tempo foi passando e eu continuei acreditando até o fim, porque se entrasse a onda eu ia dar tudo pra conseguir a nota. Demorou um pouco, mas a série entrou, a esquerda veio perfeita pra mim e eu consegui acertar as manobras para vencer. Estou muito feliz, quase nem acredito que passei para a vice-liderança no ranking (do WSL Qualifying Series) e que agora vou participar do CT também. Nossa, é muita felicidade num dia só".
DECISÃO DO TÍTULO - A grande final entrou no mar por volta das 13h30 com a Praia de Itaúna lotada de torcedores para o brasileiro e Alex Ribeiro pegou a primeira onda da bateria, fez uma manobra e arriscou o aéreo, porém sem completar. Com as séries demorando a entrar, a escolha das ondas era fundamental para não desperdiçar nenhuma chance de pontuar. Jeremy Flores também não começou bem e o brasileiro pegou outra para fazer a primeira onda completa da final e largar na frente com nota 6,67. Só que o francês logo mostra a potência das suas batidas verticais de backside numa boa esquerda e entra na briga do título com nota 8,60, abrindo 6,27 pontos de vantagem. Alex Ribeiro responde em outra esquerda perfeita, que ele acelerou para abrir com um aéreo rodando e conseguir a virada com o 6,93 recebido dos juízes.
Depois de um início agitado, o vento apertou e os surfistas ficaram no outside aguardando pela volta das ondas numa longa calmaria na Praia de Itaúna. Jeremy Flores pareceu mostrar impaciência com o passar o tempo, pegou uma onda pequena que só rendeu 4,53 pontos e a prioridade de escolha da próxima ficou com Alex Ribeiro. Enquanto o brasileiro esperava por séries maiores, o francês pegou outra esquerda para tentar virar o placar e conseguiu exatamente os 5 pontos que precisava, ganhando no desempate da maior nota. Para vencer, Alex Ribeiro teria que tirar 6,68 dos juízes nos 10 minutos da bateria e Jeremy ainda ampliou a diferença para 7,25 com nota 5,57 em outra onda. No entanto, Alex Ribeiro teve toda a paciência do mundo e foi premiado com uma ótima onda no último minuto, que abriu o paredão para ele desferir três manobras muito fortes abrindo leques da água e arrancar nota 8,0 dos juízes para vencer por 14,93 a 14,17 pontos.
"Estou feliz com o resultado mesmo assim, porque é muito difícil chegar até a final e fiquei um pouco decepcionado desta vez por não ter vencido. Mas, competição é assim mesmo, só um vence e parabéns para o Alex (Ribeiro) pela vitória", disse Jeremy Flores, que já havia perdido a final do QS 10000 encerrado no sábado da semana passada para Filipe Toledo em Trestles, na Califórnia, Estados Unidos. "Tudo acontece por uma razão, mas para mim foram dois grandes resultados pelo alto nível dos surfistas que competiram nestes dois eventos. Eu estou me sentindo bem, as pranchas estão muito boas, estou bem de cabeça, com o físico em dia, então estou superfeliz e pronto para competir nas próximas semanas lá no Rio de Janeiro".
No último dia do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema, Jeremy Flores entrou no mar para competir quatro vezes, sempre usando a força do seu backside para arrancar grandes notas dos juízes. Ele começou o domingo ganhando um duelo eletrizante contra o paulista Jessé Mendes nas oitavas de final. Depois também teve trabalho para superar o costa-ricense Carlos Munoz nas quartas e o paulista Caio Ibelli na disputa pela última vaga na grande final. O francês agora lidera o WSL Qualifying Series, mas dispensa a classificação pelo ranking de acesso por já estar garantindo a sua permanência na elite dos top-34 entre os 22 primeiros colocados no CT.
Já o campeão Alex Ribeiro, que no ano passado conquistou o título sul-americano profissional da WSL South America com duas vitórias nas etapas do QS da Argentina e de Itacaré, na Bahia, disputou só três baterias no domingo em Saquarema. A primeira vítima foi o norte-americano Nathan Yeomans na abertura das quartas de final e depois despachou um dos destaques do QS 10000 de Saquarema, Noe Mar McGonagle, da Costa Rica, que vinha acertando belos aéreos e massacrando as esquerdas com manobras potentes executadas com pressão e velocidade. Este foi um dos confrontos mais difíceis do último dia para Alex Ribeiro, que vai reforçar a "seleção brasileira" no Oi Rio Pro como vice-líder no ranking do WSL Qualifying Series.
MUDANÇAS NO G-10 - O resultado do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema apresentado pela Powerade provocou quatro mudanças de nomes entre os dez surfistas que o WSL Qualifying Series classifica para a elite dos top-34 da World Surf League. O primeiro a entrar foi o australiano Ryan Callinan e outros três só ingressaram no G-10 no último dia, quando passaram para as semifinais, os brasileiros Alex Ribeiro e Caio Ibelli e Noe Mar McGonagle, da Costa Rica. Eles tiraram da lista o cearense Michael Rodrigues, o norte-americano Michael Dunphy, o australiano Wade Carmichael e Charles Martin, da Ilha Guadalupe.
"É uma felicidade muito grande estarmos entre os dez primeiros do ranking", disse Noe Mar McGonagle, após a derrota no finalzinho da bateria para Alex Ribeiro nas semifinais. O paulista Alex Ribeiro, 25 anos, é o novo campeão do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema, desempatando o placar contra a Austrália para 4 a 3 no número de títulos conquistados nas sete edições desta etapa na Praia de Itaúna. A vitória foi dramática, conseguida na onda que entrou no último minuto da bateria, abrindo a parede para ele acertar uma série de três manobras muito fortes e tirar nota 8,0 dos juízes para virar o placar para 14,93 a 14,17 pontos sobre o francês Jeremy Flores, 27 anos, que assumiu a ponta no ranking do WSL Qualifying Series. Com o título, Alex Ribeiro saltou da 57.a para a segunda posição com os 10.000 pontos recebidos e faturou o prêmio máximo de 40 mil dólares. Ele ainda ganhou uma vaga de convidado para participar do Oi Rio Pro, a etapa brasileira do Samsung Galaxy World Surf League Championship Tour que começa nesta segunda-feira na Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro.
"Eu já estava indo tranquilo pra bateria achando que tinha conseguido a vaga de convidado para disputar o CT no Rio de Janeiro, mas aí me falaram que eu tinha que vencer a final para isso (para superar o australiano Jack Freestone no ranking), então entrei mais concentrado ainda para buscar a vitória", disse Alex Ribeiro. "Eu tive a frieza de esperar até o fim por uma onda boa, porque eu sabia que ela ia vir. O Jeremy (Flores) tinha a maior nota da bateria, eu tinha duas medianas e eu sabia que se viesse uma onda boa eu ia conseguir a nota que precisava, então minha tática deu certo e estou muito feliz".
Ele também falou sobre a longa calmaria na Praia de Itaúna na batalha final pelo título do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema, com a onda da virada só entrando no último minuto da bateria. "Eu vi as ondas mexendo lá dentro e eu só dizendo para mim mesmo que ia vir, ia vir, mas não vinha. O tempo foi passando e eu continuei acreditando até o fim, porque se entrasse a onda eu ia dar tudo pra conseguir a nota. Demorou um pouco, mas a série entrou, a esquerda veio perfeita pra mim e eu consegui acertar as manobras para vencer. Estou muito feliz, quase nem acredito que passei para a vice-liderança no ranking (do WSL Qualifying Series) e que agora vou participar do CT também. Nossa, é muita felicidade num dia só".
DECISÃO DO TÍTULO - A grande final entrou no mar por volta das 13h30 com a Praia de Itaúna lotada de torcedores para o brasileiro e Alex Ribeiro pegou a primeira onda da bateria, fez uma manobra e arriscou o aéreo, porém sem completar. Com as séries demorando a entrar, a escolha das ondas era fundamental para não desperdiçar nenhuma chance de pontuar. Jeremy Flores também não começou bem e o brasileiro pegou outra para fazer a primeira onda completa da final e largar na frente com nota 6,67. Só que o francês logo mostra a potência das suas batidas verticais de backside numa boa esquerda e entra na briga do título com nota 8,60, abrindo 6,27 pontos de vantagem. Alex Ribeiro responde em outra esquerda perfeita, que ele acelerou para abrir com um aéreo rodando e conseguir a virada com o 6,93 recebido dos juízes.
Depois de um início agitado, o vento apertou e os surfistas ficaram no outside aguardando pela volta das ondas numa longa calmaria na Praia de Itaúna. Jeremy Flores pareceu mostrar impaciência com o passar o tempo, pegou uma onda pequena que só rendeu 4,53 pontos e a prioridade de escolha da próxima ficou com Alex Ribeiro. Enquanto o brasileiro esperava por séries maiores, o francês pegou outra esquerda para tentar virar o placar e conseguiu exatamente os 5 pontos que precisava, ganhando no desempate da maior nota. Para vencer, Alex Ribeiro teria que tirar 6,68 dos juízes nos 10 minutos da bateria e Jeremy ainda ampliou a diferença para 7,25 com nota 5,57 em outra onda. No entanto, Alex Ribeiro teve toda a paciência do mundo e foi premiado com uma ótima onda no último minuto, que abriu o paredão para ele desferir três manobras muito fortes abrindo leques da água e arrancar nota 8,0 dos juízes para vencer por 14,93 a 14,17 pontos.
"Estou feliz com o resultado mesmo assim, porque é muito difícil chegar até a final e fiquei um pouco decepcionado desta vez por não ter vencido. Mas, competição é assim mesmo, só um vence e parabéns para o Alex (Ribeiro) pela vitória", disse Jeremy Flores, que já havia perdido a final do QS 10000 encerrado no sábado da semana passada para Filipe Toledo em Trestles, na Califórnia, Estados Unidos. "Tudo acontece por uma razão, mas para mim foram dois grandes resultados pelo alto nível dos surfistas que competiram nestes dois eventos. Eu estou me sentindo bem, as pranchas estão muito boas, estou bem de cabeça, com o físico em dia, então estou superfeliz e pronto para competir nas próximas semanas lá no Rio de Janeiro".
No último dia do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema, Jeremy Flores entrou no mar para competir quatro vezes, sempre usando a força do seu backside para arrancar grandes notas dos juízes. Ele começou o domingo ganhando um duelo eletrizante contra o paulista Jessé Mendes nas oitavas de final. Depois também teve trabalho para superar o costa-ricense Carlos Munoz nas quartas e o paulista Caio Ibelli na disputa pela última vaga na grande final. O francês agora lidera o WSL Qualifying Series, mas dispensa a classificação pelo ranking de acesso por já estar garantindo a sua permanência na elite dos top-34 entre os 22 primeiros colocados no CT.
Já o campeão Alex Ribeiro, que no ano passado conquistou o título sul-americano profissional da WSL South America com duas vitórias nas etapas do QS da Argentina e de Itacaré, na Bahia, disputou só três baterias no domingo em Saquarema. A primeira vítima foi o norte-americano Nathan Yeomans na abertura das quartas de final e depois despachou um dos destaques do QS 10000 de Saquarema, Noe Mar McGonagle, da Costa Rica, que vinha acertando belos aéreos e massacrando as esquerdas com manobras potentes executadas com pressão e velocidade. Este foi um dos confrontos mais difíceis do último dia para Alex Ribeiro, que vai reforçar a "seleção brasileira" no Oi Rio Pro como vice-líder no ranking do WSL Qualifying Series.
MUDANÇAS NO G-10 - O resultado do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema apresentado pela Powerade provocou quatro mudanças de nomes entre os dez surfistas que o WSL Qualifying Series classifica para a elite dos top-34 da World Surf League. O primeiro a entrar foi o australiano Ryan Callinan e outros três só ingressaram no G-10 no último dia, quando passaram para as semifinais, os brasileiros Alex Ribeiro e Caio Ibelli e Noe Mar McGonagle, da Costa Rica. Eles tiraram da lista o cearense Michael Rodrigues, o norte-americano Michael Dunphy, o australiano Wade Carmichael e Charles Martin, da Ilha Guadalupe.
"É uma felicidade muito grande estarmos entre os dez primeiros do ranking", disse Noe Mar McGonagle, após a derrota no finalzinho da bateria para Alex Ribeiro nas semifinais. The Sao Paulo Alex Ribeiro, 25, is the new champion of the Quiksilver Saquarema Pro, desempatando the score against Australia to 4-3 in the number of titles won in seven editions of this step in Itauna Beach. "I was already going quiet for battery thinking that had managed the guest spot to compete in the CT in Rio de Janeiro, but then told me that I had to win the final for this (to overcome the Australian Jack Freestone in the ranking), then went further concentrated to get the win, "said Alex Ribeiro. "I had the coolness to wait until the end for a good wave, because I knew she would come. Ventos muito fortes adiam o Quiksilver Pro Saquarema
O "day off" foi decretado na terceira chamada do dia e a próxima reunião da comissão técnica foi marcada para as 6h30 do sábado na Cidade do Surf da Região dos Lagos do Rio de Janeiro
A sexta-feira amanheceu com ventos muito fortes pela entrada de uma frente fria na Região dos Lagos do Rio de Janeiro que trouxe ondas maiores para a Praia de Itaúna, mas com o mar em transformação não oferecendo boas condições para a continuação do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema apresentado pela Powerade. O "lay day" foi decretado na terceira chamada do dia, as 13h00, com a próxima reunião da comissão técnica marcada para as 6h30 do sábado em Saquarema, para reiniciar a segunda fase da competição as 6h45 na Praia de Itaúna. Dos 96 inscritos, apenas 36 de 11 países continuam na disputa do título do segundo QS 10000 do ano, que vale um prêmio de 40 mil dólares e decisivos 10.000 pontos na briga pelas dez vagas para a elite dos top-34 da World Surf League. O campeão será definido no domingo.
Na quinta-feira foi realizada até metade da segunda fase, com doze surfistas já passando para disputar classificação para as oitavas de final do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema na única rodada de confrontos formados por três competidores. Entre os 24 surfistas que vão disputar estas seis baterias, que estavam programadas para acontecer na tarde da sexta-feira e acabaram adiadas para o sábado, os australianos são maioria com oito representantes, seguido pelo Brasil com quatro, os paulistas Wiggolly Dantas, Jessé Mendes, Caio Ibelli e o baiano Bino Lopes. Além dos representantes destes dois países que dividiram os títulos nas seis edições desta etapa de Saquarema, estão três surfistas dos Estados Unidos, dois da França e um do Havaí, um de Portugal, um do Japão, um da Nova Zelândia, um da Costa Rica, um do Taiti e um das Ilhas Canárias.
O confronto internacional que foi transferido para abrir o sábado na Praia de Itaúna terá os australianos Adam Melling e Micheal Wright, o português Nic Von Rupp e o japonês Hiroto Ohhara. Na bateria seguinte, os brasileiros Caio Ibelli e Bino Lopes disputam duas vagas para a terceira fase com o australiano Ryan Callinan e Jonathan Gonzalez, das Ilhas Canárias. E na terceira do dia entra o defensor do título do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema, Wiggolly Dantas, contra o havaiano Fredrick Patacchia, o australiano Tom Whitaker e o americano Luke Davis.
Nesta última fase de baterias formadas por quatro competidores, os dois melhores de cada avançam para a rodada classificatória para as oitavas de final, o terceiro colocado fica em 25.o lugar com 1.100 pontos e 1.900 dólares de prêmio, enquanto o último termina em 37.o com 1.000 pontos e 1.600 dólares. Os que passarem para a terceira rodada, única de confrontos com três surfistas no mar, os dois primeiros seguem para as oitavas de final e o último se despede da sétima edição do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema em 17.o lugar, com 2.200 pontos e 2.700 dólares.
Com cinco surfistas, os australianos também são maioria na lista dos doze que já se classificaram para a terceira fase nas baterias que fecharam a quinta-feira na Praia de Itaúna, Jack Freestone, Stu Kennedy, Connor O´Leary, Cooper Chapman e Thomas Woods. O Brasil tem dois, Italo Ferreira e o paulista Alex Ribeiro, assim como o Havaí, com Dusty Payne e Granger Larsen. Os outros são o francês Joan Duru, o norte-americano Nathan Yeomans e o costa-ricense Noe Mar McGonagle.

A sexta-feira amanheceu com ventos muito fortes pela entrada de uma frente fria na Região dos Lagos do Rio de Janeiro que trouxe ondas maiores para a Praia de Itaúna, mas com o mar em transformação não oferecendo boas condições para a continuação do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema apresentado pela Powerade. O "lay day" foi decretado na terceira chamada do dia, as 13h00, com a próxima reunião da comissão técnica marcada para as 6h30 do sábado em Saquarema, para reiniciar a segunda fase da competição as 6h45 na Praia de Itaúna. Dos 96 inscritos, apenas 36 de 11 países continuam na disputa do título do segundo QS 10000 do ano, que vale um prêmio de 40 mil dólares e decisivos 10.000 pontos na briga pelas dez vagas para a elite dos top-34 da World Surf League. O campeão será definido no domingo.
Na quinta-feira foi realizada até metade da segunda fase, com doze surfistas já passando para disputar classificação para as oitavas de final do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema na única rodada de confrontos formados por três competidores. Entre os 24 surfistas que vão disputar estas seis baterias, que estavam programadas para acontecer na tarde da sexta-feira e acabaram adiadas para o sábado, os australianos são maioria com oito representantes, seguido pelo Brasil com quatro, os paulistas Wiggolly Dantas, Jessé Mendes, Caio Ibelli e o baiano Bino Lopes. Além dos representantes destes dois países que dividiram os títulos nas seis edições desta etapa de Saquarema, estão três surfistas dos Estados Unidos, dois da França e um do Havaí, um de Portugal, um do Japão, um da Nova Zelândia, um da Costa Rica, um do Taiti e um das Ilhas Canárias.
O confronto internacional que foi transferido para abrir o sábado na Praia de Itaúna terá os australianos Adam Melling e Micheal Wright, o português Nic Von Rupp e o japonês Hiroto Ohhara. Na bateria seguinte, os brasileiros Caio Ibelli e Bino Lopes disputam duas vagas para a terceira fase com o australiano Ryan Callinan e Jonathan Gonzalez, das Ilhas Canárias. E na terceira do dia entra o defensor do título do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema, Wiggolly Dantas, contra o havaiano Fredrick Patacchia, o australiano Tom Whitaker e o americano Luke Davis.
Nesta última fase de baterias formadas por quatro competidores, os dois melhores de cada avançam para a rodada classificatória para as oitavas de final, o terceiro colocado fica em 25.o lugar com 1.100 pontos e 1.900 dólares de prêmio, enquanto o último termina em 37.o com 1.000 pontos e 1.600 dólares. Os que passarem para a terceira rodada, única de confrontos com três surfistas no mar, os dois primeiros seguem para as oitavas de final e o último se despede da sétima edição do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema em 17.o lugar, com 2.200 pontos e 2.700 dólares.
Com cinco surfistas, os australianos também são maioria na lista dos doze que já se classificaram para a terceira fase nas baterias que fecharam a quinta-feira na Praia de Itaúna, Jack Freestone, Stu Kennedy, Connor O´Leary, Cooper Chapman e Thomas Woods.
