Australianos seguem se destacando no Quiksilver Pro Saquarema

Os australianos já tinham mais inscritos no QS 10000 de Saquarema e na quinta-feira garantiram maioria também entre os 36 surfistas que continuam na disputa do título na Praia de Itaúna

 Dos 96 surfistas de 19 países inscritos no Quiksilver Pro Saquarema apresentado pela Powerade, depois de dois dias de disputas na Praia de Itaúna ficaram 36 de 11 nações para disputar o título do segundo QS 10000 do ano em Saquarema. A maioria continua sendo de australianos, com treze surfistas, contra apenas seis do Brasil, quatro dos Estados Unidos, três da França, três do Havaí, dois da Costa Rica e mais cinco países seguem na briga pelos 10.000 pontos e os 40 mil dólares da vitória em Saquarema com um representante, Portugal, Japão, Nova Zelândia, Taiti e Ilhas Canárias. Na quinta-feira foram realizadas mais quatorze baterias e o destaque foi o veterano australiano Tom Whitaker, 35 anos, que aumentou para 17,50 o recorde de pontos no segundo confronto do dia.

"Foi incrível! Eu me senti muito confortável aqui neste mar, deu boas ondas na bateria e me diverti bastante", disse Tom Whitaker, que ganhou nota 9,43 na melhor onda do dia na Praia de Itaúna. "A prioridade (de escolha da próxima onda) foi fundamental nesta bateria para que os surfistas pudessem escolher o posicionamento adequado para buscar as melhores ondas. Sem dúvida, isso me ajudou muito. Eu soube usar da minha prioridade e tive sorte de achar essa onda perfeita, que consegui aproveitar ao máximo".

Nesta bateria acabou caindo o primeiro dos três ex-campeões desta etapa em Saquarema que foram eliminados na quinta-feira, o catarinense Willian Cardoso, que festejou o título da segunda edição do evento em 2010. Ele quase conseguiu a classificação em sua última onda, mas não superou o norte-americano Michael Dunphy em sua estreia no Quiksilver Pro Saquarema. Os outros dois foram barrados nas baterias da segunda fase que fecharam a quinta-feira. Matt Wilkinson (campeão em 2012) saiu na primeira, que classificou o também australiano Stu Kennedy e o americano Nathan Yeomans. E Mitch Coleborn (2013) foi superado por dois compatriotas da Austrália na última bateria do dia, Thomas Woods e Cooper Chapman.

"O mar não estava gigante, mas a qualidade das ondas aqui é impressionante", destachou Thomas Woods, 22 anos, que conheceu Saquarema no ano passado e chegou no Brasil em 137.o lugar no ranking do WSL Qualifying Series. "Minha bateria estava muito forte e competi contra meus amigos australianos. Eu só procurei surfar boas ondas, me divertir e deu tudo certo. Espero me classificar nas fases seguintes para garantir pontos importantes e melhorar minha posição no ranking".

BICAMPEONATO INÉDITO - Com a eliminação dos australianos Matt Wilkinson e Mitch Coleborn e do catarinense Willian Cardoso, agora o único que pode conseguir um inédito bicampeonato no Quiksilver Pro Saquarema e de forma consecutiva é o paulista Wiggolly Dantas. A vitória na Praia de Itaúna no ano passado foi o resultado mais importante na sua classificação para a elite dos top-34 que está disputando o título mundial deste ano no Samsung Galaxy World Surf League Championship Tour. Ele ganhou o primeiro confronto da quinta-feira e vai disputar o terceiro da sexta-feira, contra o novo recordista Tom Whitaker, o havaiano Fredrick Patacchia e o norte-americano Luke Davis.

"O mar baixou um pouco hoje (quinta-feira), mas acertou mais na bancada, ficou melhor para surfar e eu consegui achar duas ondas que foram suficientes para passar em primeiro lugar na bateria", disse Wiggolly Dantas, após a vitória sobre o francês Maxime Huscenot, o também paulista Deivid Silva e Medi Veminardi, da Ilha Reunião. "Estou bem focado neste campeonato, bem tranquilo, no ano passado fui campeão aqui, resultado que foi fundamental na minha classificação para o CT e Saquarema é um lugar especial, sempre dá altas ondas que encaixam bastante com o meu surfe e estou bem feliz por estar aqui de novo".

A outra novidade da "seleção brasileira" no WCT deste ano é o potiguar Italo Ferreira, que também brilhou na quinta-feira e foi um dos dois brasileiros que já avançaram para disputar classificação para as oitavas de final na terceira fase do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema. O surfista de Baía Formosa achou boas ondas e até descartou três notas na casa dos 7 pontos que poderiam valer a vitória na maioria das baterias. Ele computou notas 8,17 e 7,57 no placar de 15,74 pontos, enquanto o catarinense Alejo Muniz, que defendia a liderança do ranking do WSL Qualifying Series nesta bateria, terminou em último com 10,70. Na briga pela segunda vaga, o havaiano Granger Larsen acabou superando o japonês Takumi Yasui por 13,63 a 12,76 pontos.

"Graças a Deus consegui pegar boas ondas e que minha tática deu certo. Eu troquei de prancha, peguei a que eu estava surfando todos os dias antes de começar o campeonato e ela está muito boa, então espero continuar neste ritmo para ir o mais longe possível, que é o meu objetivo", disse Italo Ferreira. "As séries estão demorando, então eu entrei na bateria para pegar ondas logo no início e conseguir boas notas pra deixar os adversários sempre correndo atrás. Deu tudo certo e estou muito feliz. O mar deu uma acertada, mas as séries estão muito espaçadas, então era preciso ter calma e esperar a onda certa. Foi o que eu fiz".

Na quinta-feira foi realizada até metade da segunda fase, com doze surfistas já passando para a única rodada de confrontos formados por três competidores, quando os dois primeiros colocados avançam para as oitavas de final do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema. Cinco dos classificados são da Austrália, Jack Freestone, Stu Kennedy, Connor O´Leary, Cooper Chapman e Thomas Woods. O Brasil tem dois, Italo Ferreira e o paulista Alex Ribeiro, assim como o Havaí, com Dusty Payne e Granger Larsen. Os outros são o francês Joan Duru, o norte-americano Nathan Yeomans e o costa-ricense Noe Mar McGonagle.

SEXTA-FEIRA ÀS 7H30 - Nas seis baterias que restaram para fechar a segunda fase e que vão abrir a sexta-feira na Praia de Itaúna, a Austrália também tem maioria entre os 24 surfistas com oito representantes, seguido pelo Brasil com quatro, os paulistas Wiggolly Dantas, Jessé Mendes, Caio Ibelli e o baiano Bino Lopes. Além dos representantes destes dois países, também vão disputar as últimas baterias da segunda fase do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema na manhã da sexta-feira, três surfistas dos Estados Unidos, dois da França e com um tem Havaí, Portugal, Japão, Nova Zelândia, Taiti, Costa Rica e Ilhas Canárias. A primeira chamada da sexta-feira está marcada para as 7h30 na Praia de Itaúna.

Australians follow standing out in the Quiksilver Saquarema Pro

Australiano atingiu 17,50 pontos nas duas notas computadas no segundo confronto da quinta-feira iniciada com vitória de Wiggolly Dantas, que defende o título de campeão do QS 10000 de Saquarema na Praia de Itaúna

Assim como no primeiro dia, o Quiksilver Pro Saquarema apresentado pela Powerade começou em alto nível na quinta-feira de mar clean e boas ondas de 3-5 pés na Praia de Itaúna. O defensor do título do QS 10000 de Saquarema, Wiggolly Dantas, venceu a primeira bateria do dia e na segunda o veterano australiano Tom Whitaker, 35 anos, estabeleceu um novo recorde de pontos para o campeonato com os 17,50 que totalizou em sua primeira apresentação na Cidade do Surf da Região dos Lagos do Rio de Janeiro. A programação da quinta-feira é realizar as oito baterias que restaram para fechar a rodada inicial e as oito primeiras da segunda fase.

"O mar baixou um pouco hoje (quinta-feira), mas acertou mais na bancada, ficou melhor para surfar e eu consegui achar duas ondas que foram suficientes para passar em primeiro lugar na bateria", disse Wiggolly Dantas, após a vitória sobre o francês Maxime Huscenot, o também paulista Deivid Silva e Medi Veminardi, da Ilha Reunião. "Estou bem focado neste campeonato, bem tranquilo, no ano passado fui campeão aqui, resultado que foi fundamental na minha classificação para o CT e Saquarema é um lugar especial, sempre dá altas ondas que encaixam bastante com o meu surfe e estou bem feliz por estar aqui de novo".

Outro campeão desta etapa de Saquarema realizada desde 2009 no Maracanã do surfe brasileiro estreou no segundo confronto da quinta-feira. Mas, o catarinense Willian Cardoso e os outros dois competidores bem mais jovens, foram surpreendidos pelo veterano Tom Whitaker. O australiano tem 35 anos de idade, atualmente viaja principalmente por ser chefe de equipe de uma marca, mas achou duas ótimas ondas nas esquerdas de Itaúna para arrancar uma nota 9,43 na melhor delas e totalizar 17,50 pontos, superando os 16,96 do recorde do havaiano Dusty Payne na quarta-feira.

O catarinense Willian Cardoso ainda chegou perto da classificação, mas acabou perdendo a disputa pela segunda vaga para o norte-americano Michael Dunphy, com o português José Ferreira ficando em último lugar. Nesta primeira rodada do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema, os dois primeiros colocados de cada bateria avançam para a segunda fase, o terceiro colocado fica em 49.o lugar com 1.000 dólares de prêmio e marca 600 pontos no ranking do WSL Qualifying Series, enquanto o quarto termina em 73.o lugar com 750 dólares e 550 pontos.

"Foi incrível! Eu me senti muito confortável aqui neste mar, deu boas ondas na bateria e me diverti bastante", disse Tom Whitaker. "A prioridade (de escolha da próxima onda) foi fundamental nesta bateria para que os surfistas pudessem escolher o posicionamento adequado para buscar as melhores ondas. Sem dúvida, isso me ajudou muito. Eu soube usar da minha prioridade e tive sorte de achar essa onda perfeita, que consegui aproveitar ao máximo".

Ainda pela manhã foram realizadas mais três baterias da primeira fase na quinta-feira, mas as disputas continuam até o final da tarde, devendo ir até o oitavo confronto da segunda fase. O costa-ricense Carlos Munoz completou um aéreo incrível para vencer a terceira bateria do dia e o norte-americano Luke Davis passou em segundo lugar. Já a quarta chegou a ser paralisada por falta de energia elétrica e recomeçou minutos depois com o australiano Dion Atkinson e o havaiano Fredrick Patacchia ganhando a briga pelas duas vagas do cearense Messias Felix e o havaiano Mason Ho.

Depois, uma das novidades da elite dos top-34 da World Surf League esse ano, Matt Banting, da Austrália, estreou com vitória na 21.a das 24 baterias da primeira fase, mas outro estreante acabou eliminado na disputa seguinte, o neozelandês Ricardo Christie. Ele foi barrado pelo seu compatriota, Billy Stairmand, e pelo norte-americano Kanoa Igarashi. No total, quinze estrelas da divisão principal do esporte estão em Saquarema disputando os decisivos 10.000 pontos do Quiksilver Pro Saquarema na briga pelas dez vagas que vão completar o grupo dos melhores surfistas do mundo para o Samsung Galaxy World Surf League Championship Tour de 2016.
