He gave Brazil in the Final of the Rip Curl Grom Search International, presented by GoPro, in Maresias beach with surf show Samuel Pupo
The Brazil secured another major international title in the surf. Competing "at home", Samuel Pupo won the Final of the Rip Curl Grom Search International, presented by GoPro on Saturday (2) on the beach of Maresias in São Sebastião. The victory was as a spectator (and fan) illustrates the ASP World Champion, Gabriel Medina, which in 2010 secured in Australia that same title, exclusively for surfers with up to 16 years.
Among girls, Leilani McGonagle, Costa Rica, secured the first international achievement in the surf for their country. The Rip Curl Grom Search International is known for revealing big names. Examples abound. Even the Medina, the brothers Owen and Tyler Wright, the Hawaiian Tatiana Weston-Webb and Malia Jones.
The championship in Maresias met 16 surfers from 10 countries and was held in Maresias, named after Gabriel Medina, host of this new generation. The mood of the event was evidenced when the defeated athletes leave the sea, all smiling. No complaints.
In both chosen days (the "window" of waiting began on Tuesday), everything perfect, waves and sun and beach filled. On the first day (Friday, 1), a heavier sea, with waving five to six feet (about two meters) and Saturday, more aligned, with three to four feet (one meter) and excellent training.
In the men's final, Samuel began more restrained than in other batteries, but in the sixth wave, a left, secured a beat, a torn and worked well the maneuvers to take out a 9.75 and practically ensure the new title for Brazil. "It's the best championship I've ever done. It's a lot of happiness, especially to win here, where I live, "said Samuca, 14, happy to win on the beach where he lives.
"I was very comfortable, quiet and was happy to hear the crowd screaming every good wave I was doing," he said. "Now I want to keep surfing and fun. Things are happening naturally, "he added Samuel after leaving loaded from the sea. "I want to thank God, my family and my sponsors, especially the Rip Curl, for turning my dream into reality," celebrated surfer has announced its debut in the WQS.
In the final, he faced the American Kei Kobayash, Trestles. The two surfers were the best for all phases. The Brazilian was the owner of all records. Secured the largest sums - 19.75 and 19.4 - and the biggest waves - two notes ten one 9.8.
Surfers family - his father, Wagner was professional for many years, and his brother Miguel is in the WCT, Samuel surfed really well in all the batteries he played, always seeking maneuvers on the edge. In the previous round to the semifinal, was without a doubt aside and took his first ten with a tube, a torn and an air on the same wavelength. Following, took off running again, loud "no hands" with the note 9.75, to ensure 19.75 points out of 20 possible.
In another battery, the dispute was fierce, with Kei Kobayash scoring 16.85, the New Zealand Kehu Butler, 14.20 and Raju Sena Indonesian, 13.15. In the semi, the Brazilian pulled a 8.5 and the French Lens Arancibia seven. Then Samuel secured a nine-dropping was 7.5, enough to win. And give "abused" the radical, with an air 'full rotation' to a new high in December
At ease, even secured a 9.4. Totaled 19.4 without use a nine, one 8.5, one 7.5 and one seven. He grabbed seven waves on drums, five excellent. In the second semi, Kei Kobayash was losing, he needed 8.46 and pulled out of the hat a good wave with a plane, to take 8.75, missing two minutes. The New Zealand Kehu Butler, which had been growing at the event, even tried air, but to no avail and the difference was less than half a point.
In the women's, Leilane won the Australian Jaleesa Vincent, which in turn, overcame the American Caroline Marks, who shared with the Costa Rican the best performances. Despite having the best battery note, the surfer from Australia did not get another good score and Leilani who surfed well throughout the championship, secured the title with 14.40 against 13.25.
"I came as a wild card and was confident because I trained a lot. I was very happy, especially because it is a traditional championship, "celebrated athlete of 15 years, who lives in trains in Pavones. Fan of Medina, she had one more reason to vibrate. "It was a privilege to win here in Gabriel's beach, an honor lifting the cup the same wave he learned to surf," added the surfer, who was charged by surfers Kehu Butler and Raju Sena.
Gabriel Medina, the host, was happy to welcome the finalists in "your home" and praised the technical level of the event, recalling 2010, when was international champion in Australia, a landmark to start your professional career following. "It's cool to see this new generation, live, especially here in Maresias, where it all began, where ever surfed," he said.
"Very nice to see this molecada breaking and came the memory of my amateur times, the final at Bells Beach, a special moment for me. It was an honor to have chosen me as host. The championship was awesome and everyone who participated are to be congratulated, Rip Curl and everyone who contributed, "added Medina.
The tournament director, Fernando Gonzalez, showed overall satisfaction with the sea conditions for the two days of disputes. "We got what we were looking for, which was to put the competition in the two best days of wave this week we were on hold. And really he can, both on the first day, with challenging waves, as on Saturday with more fun waves but perfect, "he said.
"We knew that athletes would be able to show their potential in these conditions. It was super pleasant, with two full days of beach, sun. We might expect in the best conditions. It was really amazing, "he celebrated. "The beach of Maresias showed all its surf potential and the competitors had all sorts of maneuvers, tubes, air, torn and beaten. The trial was also very good and took this competition to a professional level, "he added.
Remember that before the championship, finalists had several actions, such as training on nearby beaches, the challenge "Tamo Together" Brazil x World, talk with the father of Gabriel Medina speaking from experience to prepare a WCT champion and even a game of football. On the 27th, Gabriel Medina welcomed all finalists, with a dinner. To end the program, since no competitive pressure is expected a surf session on a "secret spot" on the north coast, with boat trip and Gabriel Medina company.
